Gravel (aka aggregate) is small fragments of rock that are either found in nature as is or made by crushing larger stones.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, gravel is widely used in landscaping to:

  • aid drainage
  • prevent soil from becoming too compacted
  • reduce weeds
  • regulate temperature
  • create paths

With minimal upkeep, gravel can enhance the look of your garden for years and often doesn’t need to be replaced.

Types of gravel

Gravel comes in a wide variety of styles, from natural river gravel to crushed aggregate that has been processed and screened. Sizes typically range from 5mm to 40mm.

Choosing gravel for your garden depends on the look and functionality you want to achieve. At Canberra Sand and Gravel, we classify our gravel into 2 main categories:

Quarry gravel

Our quarry gravel comes from various locations and is derived from crushed rock. Some of the different styles include:

River gravel

Our river gravels remain in their natural form and haven’t been crushed.

Options include:

While they enhance the look of your garden, these gravels also serve a purpose. Bungendore Brown, for example, is ideal for use behind retaining walls as a drainage gravel.

Both are ideal for dry garden beds like succulent gardens. They’re effective in helping with drainage, reducing soil compaction, suppressing weeds, and regulating temperature.
