We’re all familiar with the features of a professionally designed garden: clean lines, rich textures, consistent colour palettes, and healthy vegetation.
Although there are many benefits to working with a professional landscape gardener to achieve this, you can also try it alone using:
- a little imagination
- careful planning
- the right products
One such product is FormBoss. This steel edging makes it super simple to define different areas of your garden and create the structured, professional finish you’d normally need a landscaper for.

Why use FormBoss for garden edging?
FormBoss is DIY friendly, cost-effective, low maintenance, and long lasting compared to timber or plastic edging products which tend to bow over time. It’s also an excellent alternative to sleepers when you need a low retaining edge.
FormBoss has a range of practical features including:
- multiple finish options
- rolled edges to prevent cuts or injuries
- 8 profile heights and a range of thicknesses
- different shapes such as corner pieces
The company behind FormBoss is Australian, and their products are made from locally manufactured Bluescope steel.
What type of FormBoss do I need?
FormBoss comes in a range of colours and styles.
Core colours include:
- Redcor
- Galvanised steel
- Zam weathering steel
FormBoss can also provide Dulux colours so you can match a Colorbond fence or roof, and they also offer powder-coated products.
The edging profiles come in heights from 75mm to 185mm, thicknesses of 1.6mm, 2mm and 2.5mm, and a standard length of 2.4 metres.

How much FormBoss do I need?
To calculate the length of FormBoss garden edging you need, measure the perimeter of the area you want to edge.
For height, aim to bury about one-third of the edging below the ground to hide connectors and screws while maintaining stability. Each section of FormBoss should be secured with three stakes driven into the ground.
If you need to create angled or curved areas, you can manipulate the edging to form the curves or angles you desire. Corners are easy with FormBoss’ 45° corner pieces. Here’s a great explainer video from FormBoss:
How do I install FormBoss?
- Mark out your desired edge line, using spray paint if it helps.
- Use a rubber mallet to drive the stakes into the ground. A string line can help to keep the heights consistent.
- Slide the edging over the tops of the stakes. Use the self-tapping screws in the pre-drilled holes to secure them together.
- If you need shorter lengths, carefully cut the edging with an angle grinder.
Additional tools such as duckbill clamps and a spirit level can make the process easier. For circular areas like tree beds, we also sell FormBoss rings in various diameters and profile heights.
