We’ve been Canberra’s home-ground advantage for over 60 years
Helping Canberra grow
Canberra Sand and Gravel is a 100% locally owned family business and the largest landscape supplier of its kind in the region. Founded in the early 1960s by Johnny Trevillian, we began by extracting sand and gravel from the Molonglo River to support Canberra’s growing development.
As our nation’s capital expanded, operations moved to Fyshwick before a 200-acre site was established at Bungendore. This site remains a major supplier of washed sand to the concrete industry. Additional quarries at Braidwood and Bredbo provide sources of sand, topsoil, and decomposed granite.
The Fyshwick site continues to recycle materials from excavation and demolition, producing landscaping and civil construction products. In the 1990s, the business expanded to include green waste and landscape centres in Mitchell and Holt.
Now run by family successors, Canberra Sand and Gravel has grown entirely organically. We operate 4 sites across Canberra and supply homes, businesses, and civil projects with quality materials and services.

Our commitment to sustainability
Canberra Sand and Gravel has extensive experience in green waste management. We process approximately 170,000m³ of material annually and turn it into landscape products such as soils, mulches, and compost. Our recycling efforts achieve nearly 100% turnaround, with treated material returned to the Canberra region rather than being sent to landfill.
Our recycling depots are open 7 days a week, with close monitoring of incoming material to avoid contamination by plastics, metal, and other rubbish. We also provide off-site contracting to shred vegetation from construction projects.
Excavation material is repurposed wherever possible. For example, material excavated in one suburb was transferred as quality fill to another, while ornamental limestone unearthed during excavation was used in urban landscaping and feature installations at public buildings.
Our approach aligns with the ACT NoWaste Strategy, where we actively seek to reduce the amount of unprocessed material sent to landfill and ensure nearly all treated waste is returned to productive use.
